Retail Experience Design Through Audience Insight
How audience segmentation and experiential retail transformed a garden center visit into a personalized shopping experience that increased engagement and customer confidence.
Homestead Gardens × Growing Joy with Maria
Consumers often walk into a garden center excited to buy plants but unsure what will actually thrive in their home. By combining a trusted educator, live audience segmentation, and a strategic retail partnership, shoppers were matched with plants that fit their lifestyle, creating a more engaging experience while increasing confidence in their purchases.

Scope
Strategic partnership, experiential marketing, audience segmentation, customer experience design
Outcome
Created a personalized retail activation that increased shopper engagement, strengthened customer confidence, and connected plant recommendations to individual lifestyles through real-time audience segmentation.
The Opportunity
Plant care can feel intimidating, especially for new plant parents. Traditional retail merchandising asks customers to navigate hundreds of plant varieties with little understanding of what will actually work in their homes.
Rather than simply promoting products, we wanted to help customers make better buying decisions.
The goal wasn't just increasing sales.
The goal was increasing plant parent success.
Strategy 1
Understanding the Customer Before Recommending the Product
Before customers ever looked at plants, they were invited to take Maria's Plant Personality Quiz, a behavioral framework designed to identify what type of plant parent they are.
Instead of asking:
"What plant do you want?"
The experience asked:
"What kind of plant owner are you?"
That shift completely changed the shopping journey.
Strategy 2
Personalizing the Retail Experience
Each personality type was connected with plant recommendations that matched their lifestyle, experience level, schedule, and environment.
Rather than overwhelming shoppers with choices, the experience simplified decision-making through personalized recommendations.
Customers walked away feeling more confident because the plants had been selected around their behavior, not simply product features.
Strategy 3
Creating Value Through Strategic Partnership
The activation brought together three complementary strengths:
Homestead Gardens
A destination retailer with an extensive plant selection.
Growing Joy with Maria
A trusted educator with an engaged audience and a proven educational framework.
Customers
An opportunity to learn, discover, and purchase with greater confidence.
Instead of an influencer promoting products, the partnership created an experience that made both brands more valuable together than independently.
Strategy 4
Turning Education Into Engagement
Education became the marketing.
Instead of relying on discounts or promotions, shoppers engaged because the experience was interactive, personalized, and immediately useful.
The activation generated conversation, encouraged exploration throughout the garden center, and created content that extended beyond the event itself.
Results
The activation transformed a traditional retail visit into an educational experience.
Increased shopper engagement
Personalized the customer journey
Strengthened confidence in purchasing decisions
Created value for both retail and influencer audiences
Positioned education as a driver of both customer experience and retail performance
Key Insight
Consumers don't just want more information.
They want confidence.
When you understand customer behavior first, you stop selling products and start helping people make better decisions. That's what creates engagement, trust, and long-term brand loyalty.
